I had a brief chat with Toki, whose uber-cute vocal chords you will hear on our upcoming CD “Disko Warp Presents Anime Love Hardcore” next month. Toki has one of those voices that just naturally sounds adorable, like it’s been pitched up about 10%, which saves me a lot of trouble in the studio. Being about a decade my junior, she’s schooled me in the ways of anime conventions and internet acronyms. We haven’t met yet, but she’s coming to Sakuracon, so I’m excited to see if she’s as hyper in person and she is when we chat on the phone ;)
Pete: A/S/L?:
Toki: Quite young/So no thanks/<3 (O rly? eternal/tentaclemonster/theocean) (NO RLY 19/f/ks… p4p)
How much caffeine have you had today?
None, soda is ickygross ;-;
Describe your typical day using only adjectives:
Sparkle bubble glitter petite jellyfish cuddlepuddle :3 (what a coincidence, those are my favorite words!~)
Tell me some of your favorite anime - both classic and current:
I was started early on the classics so I’m a little more partial to them. The 70s Cutey Honey is so fantastic I could watch it over and over. Berserk, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures, Record of Lodoss Wars, Project A-ko, Dr. Slump… Just to name a few ;3 For newer stuff, I am completely in love with Mushishi and all of Satoshi Kon’s work such as Millennium Actress and Paprika. Although I hate to admit it, it’s probably completely obvious that I’m the sort of person who loves those mundane all-girl cast anime like Azumanga Daioh and Ichigo Mashimaro but I do. Oh no, there goes my manly reputation…
(Pete: I find Lucky*Star similarly intriguing in a boring sort of way, so no judging!)
I hear you’ve attended a lot of anime conventions - do you have any particular favorite cons?:
Oooh ACen definitely. Sakuracon is also quite boss. AKon was my first, so I suppose it has a special place in my heart :3 I’m attending nine conventions this year by the way. Many awful things happen to me at conventions but for every bad thing that happens something then ten times as good happens!
And any favorite con stories?:
So many!!! I swear to all that is holy I am the LUCKIEST person alive at anime conventions! Last year at Katsucon I ended up on stage with YMCK and spent time with the band after the convention. Even though I can hardly speak english around people I admire, let alone Japanese, we got along really well! Aural Vampire was there too but Exo Chika is intimidatingly pretty so I didn’t talk to her much. And Rave Man doesn’t really talk xD But there was trouble with my plane ticket so I ended up having to wait in the airport for about 20 hours… I’d totally do it all over again.
And then and then at Sakuracon I won Best in Show at the Idol Contest and then performed at closing ceremonies but I was so nervous and hoarse by that time that I’m a little ashamed of that performance orz…
And then ACen… So much bad things happened that it might be surprising that this was my favorite convention. I rode up with friends I guess I didn’t know as well as I thought cuz we had a falling out at the convention and they pretty much abandoned me in Chicago (ended up being a 16 hour bus trip home). I had wanted to go because mydjsobad was producing the party “Hardcore Synergy” and a bunch of bemani and j-core artists were going to be spinning and I LOVE BEMANI GAMES. So I just decided to take the hits as they come and go to the party with a completely carefree mindset. And it was so fun! I made a bunch of friends at the party and then… I met DJ Chucky (jcore/bemani artist. Hyper the Core anyone?). Not only did we meet but he and a bunch of the other DJs were like hey you’re cool, we like your bikini tutu (they didn’t say this but I’m assuming this was the true reason), come hang out with us. Unavoidably at first I’m sure alot of the guys thought I was just some weeaboo convention groupie but it didn’t take too long before my innate awesomeness (read as “genuine geekiness”) shown through. I was generally accepted and ended up spending the rest of the convention with all the bemanistyle.com guys :D I had a great time and I can’t wait to hang out with them again next year. <3 The end.
And finally at fanimecon I met my one and only idol Halko Momoi… she is the queen of akihabara and everything I want to be when I grow up. I never ever thought I would get to see her perform but now that I have I would be happy to die. I was even on stage for her final song. I felt like such a geek. I could hardly focus on the wotagei because I was in such awe orz
You’re about 10 years younger than me, please explain the phenomenon known as “glomping”:
I… I honestly am not sure. I think that it is a combination of the words “glom” and “jump”… I don’t glomp people personally. I pounce >:3 Cuz I’m a lion. So I might suggest that everyone get in the car. That is all.
Any message for Disko Warp’s fans?
No game! No Life! -throws up nerdy non-gang-related gang signs- ww jk I hope that you all like my contributions to the album and I hope to work with Disko Warp again! <3
Thank you Toki!
